Each year, thousands of youth age out of U.S. foster care, facing severe instability, with around 20% becoming homeless immediately, and many more experiencing homelessness by their mid-20s, highlighting a critical need for support like transitional housing to prevent housing instability, employment gaps, and negative health outcomes. The statistics show profound challenges, including high rates of homelessness, pregnancy, unemployment, and low college graduation rates, demonstrating a direct link between aging out of foster care and homelessness, necessitating robust housing programs.
The Age-Out Project (TAP) is an Independent Living Program serving young adults ages 18 and older who are transitioning out of foster care or experiencing housing instability. TAP provides structured, supportive housing combined with individualized case management and life-skills development to promote stability, accountability, and successful independence. Housing is provided in single-gender homes. Residences are not co-ed, and males and females are housed in separate homes to ensure safety, structure, and appropriateness of services. Program costs vary based on length of stay, with short-term, transitional, and longer-term options available. Emergency and temporary housing placements may also be available, subject to capacity, to support immediate stabilization needs. The Age-Out Project accepts referrals from DFCS, courts, agencies, and community partners. All placements are reviewed through an intake process to ensure appropriate program fit.
The Age-Out Project was founded by Mrs Q. Grant a Mental Health Therapist with a history of working with young adults and understanding the challenges youth face when they age out of foster care or some other form of placement which is usually no fault of their own. Mrs Grant saw a need and decided to put her resources to work to help young adults attain the life they deserve.
